Most guys jump in the shower every morning and automatically shampoo their hair without really thinking about whether it needs it. Daily washing is one of the most common hair habits, and for a lot of men, it is also one of the more damaging ones.
What Over-Washing Actually Does
Your scalp produces natural oils that keep hair healthy, moisturised, and manageable. Shampoo cleans by stripping those oils away. Wash daily and your scalp responds by producing more oil to compensate, which means you end up greasier faster and stuck in a cycle that gets harder to break. For most hair types, washing every second or third day is the sweet spot.
It Depends on Your Hair Type
Thicker or coarser hair holds oil less visibly and generally needs washing less often than fine hair. If you are training most days, working somewhere hot, or using a lot of product, washing more frequently makes sense. Use your hair as the guide rather than the calendar. It will tell you when it genuinely needs it.
What You Use Matters Just as Much
A sulphate-free shampoo is worth the upgrade. Standard shampoos can strip more than necessary and leave your hair dry and brittle over time. Pair it with a conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends rather than the scalp, and you will notice a difference in texture and manageability within a week or two. Getting the basics right between visits also makes a real difference to how your cut holds up.
